It is also a good antidote during the summer months to the numerous holidaymakers buzzing around the Greek Islands. For those who can stay a few days, Thessaloniki is a natural starting point for exploring some of the north part of the mainland. Some of the highlights around the city include: Vergina with the burial tombs of Philip II of Macedon; the pretty town of Kastoria with its lake; beachfront idylls on the Kalkidiki peninsula; Mt Athos, which if you intend to visit you'll need your visitors note from Thessaloniki anyway.....
